Getting Started with Infinite Realms: Character to Campaign in 5 Minutes
You don't need a group, a rulebook, or a free Saturday. Infinite Realms is a browser-based solo RPG with an AI Dungeon Master that handles the rules while you focus on the adventure. This guide walks you through everything — from creating your first character to playing your first scene.
Step 1: Create Your Account
Head to infiniterealms.app and sign up. You can use Google, email, or other providers through our WorkOS authentication. Pick a username, confirm your email, and you're in.
The free tier (Wanderer) gives you one active campaign with 10 messages per session — enough to get a feel for how the AI DM works.
Step 2: Build Your Character
Click New Character and you'll enter the full D&D 5E character creation flow. It's a multi-step wizard that covers everything:
- Basic Info — Name and description
- Race — Pick from the standard 5E races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, etc.) with full racial trait descriptions
- Subrace — Where applicable (Hill Dwarf, Wood Elf, etc.)
- Class — Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, Cleric — all the 5E classes with detailed descriptions
- Ability Scores — Choose between Standard Array or manual point assignment
- Hit Points — Calculated from your class and Constitution
- Equipment — Starting gear based on your class and background
- Proficiencies — Skill and weapon proficiencies
- Spells — If you're a caster, full spell selection with filtering and search
- Background — Your character's history before the adventure
- Personality — Here's where it gets fun: the AI generates a backstory and personality for you based on your choices. Don't like it? Hit regenerate until something clicks.
- Appearance — AI-generated physical description
- Review — Confirm everything and finalize
First-timer tip: Don't overthink it. Pick a race and class that sound fun. The AI scales encounters to your character, so there's no wrong build. A Halfling Bard is just as viable as a Human Fighter.
Step 3: Start a Campaign
Once your character is ready, start a new campaign. Give the AI a premise — it can be as simple as "a mystery in a coastal town" or as specific as "my character is hunting the necromancer who destroyed their village."
The AI DM will set the scene: describe where you are, what you see, and present your first choice. From here, the story is yours.
Step 4: How to Play
The interface has three main sections:
- Story Panel — The AI's narration appears here. This is the DM's voice.
- Action Bar — Type what you want to do in plain English and hit Enter.
- Character Sheet — Your stats, inventory, spells, and HP update automatically in the side panel.
Talking to the AI DM
Just type naturally. The AI understands intent:
- "I search the room for hidden doors." → The AI rolls a Perception or Investigation check behind the scenes and narrates what you find (or don't).
- "I try to persuade the guard to let us through." → Persuasion check with your Charisma modifier.
- "I cast Fireball at the goblin cluster." → The AI handles the save DC, damage rolls, and narrates the result.
- "I want to sneak past the sleeping ogre." → Stealth check vs. the ogre's passive Perception.
You don't need to know the exact rules. The AI knows which skill applies, what your modifier is, and whether you have advantage or disadvantage. Just describe what your character does.
Step 5: When Combat Starts
The AI detects when a situation turns violent and shifts into combat mode. Here's what happens:
- Initiative is rolled for everyone automatically
- Turn order appears so you know when it's your move
- The 3D battle map loads with tokens representing each combatant
- Health bars and condition icons show the state of the fight at a glance
On your turn, describe your action: "I attack the nearest skeleton with my longsword" or "I cast Shield of Faith on myself." The AI resolves the mechanics — attack roll, damage, saving throws — and narrates the result.
Combat features you'll notice:
- Death saves tracked automatically
- Concentration saves when you take damage while holding a spell
- Opportunity attacks when enemies move past you
- Racial traits and class features applied correctly
- Fighting style bonuses factored into every roll
When combat ends, the AI transitions back to exploration seamlessly.
Tips for Your First Session
Be specific. "I search the desk" gets better results than "I look around." The AI rewards detail with detail.
Think in character. The AI mirrors your energy. If you describe actions dramatically — "I slam my fist on the table and demand answers" — the narration escalates to match.
Don't worry about rules. You don't need to say "I make a Dexterity saving throw." Just say what you do. The AI picks the right mechanic.
Check the memory panel. The side panel tracks NPCs, locations, quests, and items the AI has remembered. It's useful for recapping after a break.
Sessions can be any length. Play for 15 minutes on a lunch break or three hours on a weekend. Your campaign saves automatically and picks up right where you left off.
Embrace failure. Failed rolls create the most interesting stories. The AI is designed to make setbacks fun, not frustrating.
What Happens Next
After your first session, your campaign persists. The AI remembers:
- Every NPC you met and how you treated them
- Locations you explored and what you found there
- Quests you accepted, completed, or abandoned
- Items you picked up and choices you made
- Plot threads and foreshadowing woven into the story
Come back tomorrow, next week, or next month. Your AI DM will be waiting, story intact, ready to pick up exactly where you left off.
